FFI Scheme sees enforcement notices drop but HSE inspectors not being lenient

Enforcement notices served by the HSE are down on previous years but this is not because inspectors are being more lenient.

Now, instead of issuing an enforcement notice, HSE inspectors are charging the work against the Fee For Intervention (FFI) scheme. This means that businesses are running up bills at the rate of £124 an hour.

Client prosecuted for trench collapse fatality

HSE safety drive suggests standards are slipping

During a recent blitz of refurbishment projects, HSE inspectors took enforcement action at one in four sites. This compares to a similar initiative early last year when one in five sites received an enforcement notice, suggesting that standards are deteriorating.

148 workers suffer fatal injuries

The HSE has published the latest ‘full-year’ statistics on fatal injuries in the workplace.

The provisional figure for the number of workers fatally injured in 2012/13 is 148 and corresponds to a rate of fatal injury of 0.5 deaths per 100,000 workers. This is 18% lower than the average for the past five years (181).

RIDDOR changes come into force next week

On 1 October 2013 the updated Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) come into force.

The changes will simplify the mandatory reporting of workplace injuries for businesses, while ensuring that the data collected gives an accurate and useful picture of workplace incidents.
