148 workers suffer fatal injuries

The HSE has published the latest ‘full-year’ statistics on fatal injuries in the workplace.

The provisional figure for the number of workers fatally injured in 2012/13 is 148 and corresponds to a rate of fatal injury of 0.5 deaths per 100,000 workers. This is 18% lower than the average for the past five years (181).

RIDDOR changes come into force next week

On 1 October 2013 the updated Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) come into force.

The changes will simplify the mandatory reporting of workplace injuries for businesses, while ensuring that the data collected gives an accurate and useful picture of workplace incidents.

Safer sites HSE inspection initiative underway

HSE construction inspectors are carrying out a major inspection and enforcement initiative targeting the refurbishment sector within construction.

The initiative started last week and will continue until Friday 27th September 2013. It will be similar in scope to interventions in 2006/07 and 2012/13.

A Rochdale bedding manufacturer has been fined £50,000 after a health and safety inspection found most of its machines were unsafe to use and one machine was wrapped with cardboard as the only way of protecting workers from the dangerous moving parts inside.
