Health of thousands of construction workers affected by heavy lifting

The health of thousands of workers in the construction industry is being affected as a result of injuries caused by incorrect methods of lifting and moving heavy objects on building sites.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), around 40,000 construction workers develop a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) every year, which occur as a result of injuries to muscles, bones, joints and nerves.

Employees are reporting difficulties not only affecting them while they are working, but also creating issues in their personal lives outside of work, due to problems with standing, sitting down and even walking.

HSE increases inspections

The worrying figures have led to action by HSE inspectors to raise awareness of the prevalence of these health conditions. Inspectors have recently been carrying out around 1,000 inspections to monitor how workers are moving heavy items while on site, and ensuring that businesses have the correct procedures in place to protect their staff.

Protecting your employees

Employers are required by law to manage any risks that could affect workers’ health. If the moving and lifting of heavy items is done in a correct, safe manner, there is no need for the damaging health consequences being reported.

Tasks related to heavy lifting and moving should be considered and properly planned out before work starts – with all workers properly trained and confident with regards to the task at hand, and the use of appropriate equipment where required. Lifting should also be supervised, and procedures should be regularly reviewed to ensure effectiveness.
