£16.25 million ICON Rollercoaster

Aegis was appointed as the CDM Principal Designer for the UK’s first ever double-launch rollercoaster that reaches heights of 88.5ft, with drops of up to 82ft.

The £16.25 million project, not only included the construction of the rollercoaster but a substation, control room and retail outlet.  ICON is Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s newest ride stretching over 1.14km accelerates at 0-80km/h in 2.25 seconds before reaching heights of 88 feet at speeds of up to 85km/h.

Aegis’ involvement ran from January 2017 to March 2018 and because of ICON’s location next to other attractions at the Pleasure Beach, the project was complex and carried various risks.

How the client benefitted

Blackpool Pleasure Beach selected Aegis because of the team’s significant knowledge and experience of working on machinery and engineering construction projects across a wide range of sectors.

Why it is crucial to understand the client and their needs

For construction projects where there will be more than one contractor, clients will have a responsibility to appoint a Principal Designer. As we have one of the largest teams of CDM Consultants in the North West, Aegis has the skills, knowledge, experience, training and organisational capability to fulfil this role.

Projects such as ICON also require CDM professionals that help clients through a complex project and have the ability to ensure that works are carried out to an exceptionally high standard especially in project of this nature when so much is at stake.
