Regulations to be aware of: New smoke detector legislation
The Government has successfully passed new regulations making it compulsory for landlords to fit smoke alarms in rented homes.
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (England) Regulations 2015 require landlords to have a working smoke alarm on each floor of their property and a carbon monoxide detector in properties that burn solid fuel.
While the number of deaths and injuries from fire in accommodation have reduced in recent years, the majority of victims continue to be those who are the most vulnerable, and who often live in private rented accommodation.
The aim of the legislation is to improve the safety of families in rented accommodation through landlords ensuring that proper alarms, which can cost as little as £15 each, are in place and working.
