Preston Firm In Line For Hat Trick Of National Awards

Preston-based company Aegis has been shortlisted for three national awards and the outstanding work of one of the firm’s employees means he has a chance to be named Construction Design and Management (CDM) Co-ordinator of the Year 2011 by the Association for Project Safety (APS).

The APS awards are unique, being the only ones of their kind dedicated to recognising excellence in health and safety risk management in the construction industry.

Against tough competition in this specialist area, Aegis’ trio of nominations puts the construction safety firm, which employs one of the North’s largest teams of independent CDM Co-ordinators, in distinguished company.

Aegis boss Adam Kaley explains: “We are shortlisted alongside ABB, one of the world’s largest industrial conglomerates, and Halcrow, one of the UK’s top engineering consultancies. It is a tremendous honour to be recognised by the APS in this way.

“We have St Monica’s Vocational Centre in Bury shortlisted for the Architectural Project of the Year, whilst the Long Spars and Longerons Machining Project at BAE Systems, Samlesbury, is nominated in the Engineering Project of the Year category.”

The exceptional contribution of Shaun Brennan, Aegis’ CDM Co-ordinator for St Monica’s Vocational Centre, means he has a chance to be named CDM Co-ordinator of the Year 2011.

As Senior CDM Co-ordinator for Specialist Engineering at Aegis, Shaun had a pivotal role in ensuring that the St Monica’s project team was effective in designing out risks and mitigating hazards. The Centre, designed by Preston-based architects Cassidy and Ashton, took 13 months to construct and was entirely accident- and incident-free.

Tim Hudson, Technical Director at Aegis, worked on the Long Spars and Longerons Machining Project at BAE Systems, Samlesbury, which involved the installation of machines to make parts for the Joint Strike Fighter. Committed to health and safety, Aegis’ client BAE Systems required that their machine would be safe to install, operate and maintain. This was a complex task requiring specialist knowledge in a number of areas, well beyond the capability of many CDM Co-ordinators. However using Tim’s expertise in this field, the demanding project was successful and completed on time.

Adam adds: “Last year Tim was runner-up in the award for CDM Co-ordinator of the Year, sponsored by the ‘Builder and Engineer’ magazine, for his work on a manufacturing facility at BAE Systems, Samlesbury.

“These new award nominations demonstrate the continuing excellence of Aegis staff in the field of health and safety risk management.

“Our success is a team effort, thanks to the commitment, technical expertise and extensive safety knowledge of our people.”

Aegis will be joining a host of other top firms at the APS Annual Awards Dinner to be held in London on 8 September 2011, where the winners will collect their accolades from APS President John Banks.
