Latest Statistics Show ‘One Fire Nearly Every Day’ in London’s Schools

Fire chiefs view recent statistics from London Fire Brigade (LFB) as a stark reminder of why fire safety management is important for education buildings.

LFB’s figures show that in 2011 there was one fire every three days in the capital’s schools, colleges and nurseries − the equivalent of one fire nearly every school day.

A total of 36 arson attacks took place in the capital’s schools, colleges and nursery buildings, along with a further 113 accidental fires.

Each year nationally, one in eight schools suffers a serious arson attack and school fires cost around £65 million, with London accounting for over a third of that figure. Such fires also cause massive disruption to students, teachers and families.
