Aegis’ key role in new BAE projects

Aegis’ working relationship with BAE Systems has spanned almost two decades, and we’re now applying our extensive expertise to three new projects.

The projects which Aegis is providing Principal Designer services on are:

BAE Training Academy

Stringent health and safety consideration is vital to the successful delivery of BAE’s new £15.6million training academy. In our role as Principal Designer, Aegis is managing risk and advising the project team on all health and safety matters for the duration of the project.

The state-of-the-art facility will accommodate a record number of more than 800 apprentices every year and is located within the Lancashire Enterprise Zone in Samlesbury.

You can watch a fly-through video of the new training academy here.

430 Building Extension Phase 2

This is a project which will provide a significant extension to BAE’s existing, state-of-the-art F-35 manufacturing facility, as part of the ramp-up in production of the international combat jet.

Aegis’ provision of CDM services means working closely with BAE to coordinate health and safety arrangements across the entire programme – a complex undertaking due to the size of the project.

The 4,500m² expansion follows the UK Government’s recent commitment to 138 F-35 Lightning II STOVL variant aircraft for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. The Government is also accelerating procurement of the aircraft, making 24 available on the UK’s new Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales aircraft carriers by 2023.

The facility’s expansion work, due to be completed in January 2017, is the final part of a three-phase plan for the facility, which was originally opened in 2003 at a cost of £11million. When the new facility is complete, it will be capable of manufacturing 160 aircraft sets per annum, an increase of around 250 per cent from current levels.

The planned expansion will provide more space for the aircraft tail assembly lines, test facilities and facilities to marry-up the two halves of each rear fuselage. It will also see redevelopment of around 1,500m² of existing floor space to provide more capacity, including bigger areas for the paint shop and sub-assembly activity.

There is a potential requirement for more than 3,000 aircraft over the next 20 years, meaning the F-35 Lightning II will continue to make a significant contribution to the UK economy.

Logistics Facility

The third project to which Aegis is providing Principal Designer services is the design and construction of a distribution warehouse and office pod – the first major development in the Lancashire Enterprise Zone at Samlesbury.

Operated by BAE’S logistics contractor, Wincanton, the £10.8million development is part of a wider development adjacent to the Samlesbury site. The warehouse is 165,000sq ft in size and Aegis’ CDM solutions involved the delivery of co-ordinated health and safety arrangements to ensure processes and procedures for all activity were carried out safely and effectively.
