Aegis delivers quality assurance for net zero-ready media and arts hub
Aegis has completed its role as clerk of works for a major new development at Cardinal Newman College in Preston.
The new St Catherine Building is a contemporary teaching centre that will significantly enhance the media and arts provision and help transform the college into a leading centre for creative education in the region.
The 1,200 square metre, three-storey facility has been purpose-built to accommodate the college’s growing sixth form departments, particularly in TV, digital media, and art, into a single integrated space that encourages both innovation and collaboration.
The £6 million development also includes landscaped outdoor areas that enhance the surrounding environment and offer students additional space to learn and connect.
We were engaged to provide both building and mechanical & electrical (M&E) clerk of works services throughout the construction period, which spanned from September 2023 to April 2025.
Our remit focused on upholding quality standards, monitoring compliance, and supporting the project’s ambition to meet high levels of sustainability and technical performance.
Adam Kaley, managing director, said: “We’re proud of our M&E clerk of works teams who were able to support Newman College with the state-of-the-art facility, making sure construction met the highest standards and helping to deliver a facility that reflects both the college’s educational ambitions and its commitment to sustainability.”
“It’s always rewarding to contribute to a project that raises the bar for education, but it’s doubly special when it’s right on your doorstep. Many of our team have personal ties to the college, with family and friends having studied there, so this one really meant a lot to us.”
Students and staff will benefit from a professional-standard TV studio, a fully equipped photography studio, and dedicated rooms for graphics, art, and media. These facilities are complemented by a range of general classrooms, open learning areas, staff rooms, and offices.
The St Catherine Building has been designed in line with the Department for Education’s Net Zero in Operation specification, ensuring that the facility will operate with minimal energy consumption and a reduced environmental impact.
