The Home Quality Mark (HQM) is an independently assessed national standard for new homes, which uses a simple 5-star rating to provide information from impartial experts on a new home’s design, construction quality and running costs.
HQM will also show the impact of the home on the occupant’s health and wellbeing. It will demonstrate the home’s environmental footprint and its resilience to flooding and overheating in a changing climate. In addition, HQM will evaluate the digital connectivity and performance of the home.
The HQM comprises two elements, a five-star rating giving a clear overall picture of the home’s quality, and a set of indicators focussed on specific aspects.
The benefits for housing developers:
The HQM will enable housing developers to showcase the quality of their new homes, and identify them as having the added benefits of being likely to need less maintenance, cheaper to run, better located, and more able to cope with the demands of a changing climate.
The benefits for home owners:
The HQM will enable home owners to easily investigate the quality of homes – establishing their likely running and maintenance costs, impacts on health and wellbeing, ability to cope with the demands of a changing climate and environmental impacts against a national standard.
HQM has been developed by BRE, the UK’s leading building science centre, based on years of building standards experience. It is part of the BREEAM family of quality and sustainability standards.
Aegis can provide independent, qualified and licenced professionals who can assess and score houses against the HQM ratings. They can also provide advice and guidance during every phase of development from design through to construction. Aegis staff can also provide SAP calculations to meet Part L1A of the Building Regulations, which complement, support and verify the HQM Assessment.
